Closing the Gap: How Veneers Can Help Your Smile

Gaps between teeth are a common cosmetic concern that many patients these days have to deal with, and while yours might’ve seemed cute or unique in the past, you may also feel like it’s finally time to have it fixed. However, you might not want to commit to orthodontic treatment—so what other options are there? Veneers, known for their incredible versatility, could be an effective answer. Here’s what you need to know.

How Veneers Can Close Gaps in Teeth

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells that are often made from porcelain, since the material closely resembles the enamel layer of your teeth. They can be bonded to the outer layer of teeth with aesthetic issues, like chips, stains, and more, instantly concealing them and creating a more uniform appearance. In many cases, veneers can deliver dramatic results, and the process normally only takes two appointments over a couple of weeks.

One key dental flaw that drives patients to pursue veneers is when they have a gap between their teeth (sometimes called a diastema). While mostly harmless, this issue can still detract from a patient’s self-confidence and make them reluctant to show off their smile. Since veneers can be shaped exactly like natural teeth, they can alter the appearance of the teeth near the gap, effectively “closing” it without actually moving the teeth at all.

When Orthodontic Treatment May Be Better

Orthodontic treatment, including traditional metal braces as well as clear aligner options, may be recommended when gaps are larger or caused by bite alignment issues, or pretty much any sort of problem that can impact a patient’s dental health. Gaps between teeth that are the result of misalignment or bite problems can contribute to all kinds of oral issues down the road, including a higher risk of cavities, wear on the teeth, problems with the jaw joints, and more. This means that in some cases, it’s better to address the underlying problems that might cause gaps between teeth, rather than merely targeting the gaps with veneers.

Every smile is unique, and the best way to close the gaps in yours depends on your individual needs. When you meet with your dentist, after a quick examination and discussion about your goals, whether veneers are the answer or something else is needed, that gap in your smile can be easily closed!
