Veneers are one of the most popular ways to transform your smile, correcting everything from chips and stains to minor misalignment. But before committing to treatment, many patients have one important question: “Will getting veneers make my teeth sensitive?” Because a small amount of enamel is removed to place veneers, this is a fair thing to wonder about! That said, here’s why it’s nothing you need to worry about in the long run.
Why Is Enamel Removed for Veneers?
To ensure that your veneers fit naturally and comfortably, a thin layer of enamel, usually less than a millimeter, is removed from the front of the teeth being treated. This step creates room for the veneers so they don’t look bulky or feel unnatural once bonded in place.
However, enamel doesn’t regenerate, which is why some patients worry that removing even a small amount could leave teeth more vulnerable to sensitivity. While it’s common to experience mild, temporary sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks in the days following your veneer placement, this sensitivity is short-lived and normally fades within a week or two as your teeth settle into their new normal.
When Is Dental Sensitivity a Problem?
While some sensitivity is expected, ongoing or worsening discomfort isn’t normal and shouldn’t be ignored. Constant sensitivity can sometimes indicate that a veneer isn’t fitting properly, that your bite has been thrown off and needs adjusting, or that an underlying issue like a cavity or gum recession is present.
If your sensitivity doesn’t improve after a couple of weeks, or if it’s accompanied by pain, it’s important to reach out to our office so we can take a closer look. But in the meantime, some tips to help you manage it at home include:
- Use a toothpaste that is specifically formulated for sensitive teeth
- Avoid consuming extremely hot or cold foods and drinks for the first few days
- Be sure that you’re using a soft-bristled toothbrush and brushing gently
The bottom line is, while mild, temporary sensitivity after getting veneers is normal, it shouldn’t be something you have to live with long-term—nor should it be something that stops you from seeking out your dream smile!
